Atlas Aquæ prosegue le ricerche avviate da OMNE sul tema della natura, approfondendo il linguaggio e le possibilità dell’editoria fotografica contemporanea. Dopo Index Naturae e Index Naturae. Revisited (Skinnerboox, 2023 e 2024), il nuovo volume esplora l’universo dell’acqua attraverso un ampio repertorio di immagini tratte da una bibliografia di 68 libri fotografici pubblicati tra il 2018 e il 2025.
Le immagini selezionate, nella loro varietà, indagano l’acqua nei suoi stati, nelle sue manifestazioni, nella sua sostanza e nella sua forma. Per questo la ricerca si configura come un laboratorio di potenziali narrazioni visive, capaci di restituire la complessità di un tema al contempo naturale, culturale e simbolico.
Pensato come una possibile raccolta enciclopedica di immagini, Atlas Aquæ si presenta allora come un “libro dei libri” che preserva la singolarità di ogni voce senza rinunciare alla coralità del progetto. La struttura del volume segue un doppio ordine alfabetico, diretto e inverso, generando un flusso che, nello scorrere, destabilizza la logica ordinatrice e la trasforma in movimento. Riprendendo l’idea dell’atlante e alcune delle sue interpretazioni fondamentali (Aby Warburg, Gerhard Richter), il viaggio proposto da Atlas Aquæ esplora la complessità e la varietà degli approcci degli autori coinvolti, offrendo uno spazio di riflessione in grado di coniugare poeticamente scienza, politica e ambiente. L’acqua, intesa sia come flusso sia come rete di relazioni, diventa interprete di un pensiero contemporaneo: la sua duplice natura di materia vivente e di archetipo universale la rende una metafora privilegiata per letture di carattere estetico, scientifico e politico.

Atlas Aquæ continues the research started by OMNE on the theme of nature, exploring the language and possibilities of contemporary photographic publishing. Following Index Naturae and Index Naturae. Revisited (Skinnerboox, 2023 and 2024), this new book explores the universe of water through an extensive selection of images taken from a bibliography of 68 photobooks published between 2018 and 2025.>
The selected images, in their variety, investigate water in its states, manifestations, substance, and form. For this reason, the research is conceived as a laboratory of potential visual narratives, capable of conveying the complexity of a theme that is at once natural, cultural, and symbolic. Structured as a potential encyclopedic collection of images, Atlas Aquæ presents itself as a “book of books” that preserves the uniqueness of each voice without sacrificing the collective nature of the project. The structure of the volume follows a double alphabetical order, direct and reverse, generating a flow that, in its progression, destabilizes the organizing logic and transforms it into movement. Building on the idea of the atlas and some of its fundamental interpretations (Aby Warburg, Gerhard Richter), the journey proposed by Atlas Aquæ explores the complexity and variety of the approaches of the participating authors, offering a space for reflection capable of poetically combining science, politics, and the environment. Water, understood both as a flow and as a network of relationships, becomes an interpreter of contemporary thought: its dual nature as living matter and universal archetype makes it a privileged metaphor for readings of aesthetic, scientific, and political character.
